Netflix: A case study on feature removal
Netflix relented and is now keeping it’s Profile feature. It’s a good example of why you need to be careful when adding new features. Once something is available, it’s hard to take it away — no matter what the justification. It sounds like Netflix had sound reasons: lack of use and complexity. Still, a small minority of vocal power users insisted on keeping it.
Should the power Netflix users drive the experience for the average Netflix user? Hard to say in this case. You have to assume that Netflix did the math and figured the cost of enraging the power users wasn’t worth it.
If Netflix really wants to get rid of this, then they should probably hide it for new members. No one ever likes to do this but sometimes it’s the only way to weed out features…
