Without commenting directly on the content in the “Digg and YouTube…” article, I would definitely have to agree with some of the comments about sites like Digg. Once you get a story to the front page with a flashy title, it becomes self feeding because it makes the RSS feed, etc… I subscribe to a couple of these feeds, and I often question how some of these articles made the most popular list when the content in them sucks. It’s almost as if people aren’t reading anything but the title in many cases, which really begs the question of are these really popular articles or just clever titles. My own personal experiences with posting URLs to Reddit and Digg support the second theory as well.
Personally, the only thing that matters to me is that sites like digg and reddit show me interesting articles that I have not seen. I really don’t care how the article gets on the front page. I don’t care if it is a gamed system. Just show me something interesting.
Now, I recently unsubscribed to the digg front page RSS feed because it seemed boring to me. Most of the content I was already seeing or didn’t care about. Also, the fact you had to first navigate to digg to find the original link was annoying.
I know these sites get a lot of page views. Who know how long it will last. Is it a fad or trend. Tough to say.
