Calibrating the home theater
I have finally finished setting up my new surround sound. It’s taken forever to get everything in the right place and run all the wires.
Now that I have spent all the time and effort to get it installed, I want to ensure I am getting the best sound possible. The sub woofer I bought included the recommendation to buy Radio Shack Sound Level Meter and a test disc.
Anyone ever done this? Was the audio noticeably better once you calibrated everything? Any recommendations on what test disc to use?
With my old setup the sound was noticably better after calibration. Pick the spot you will normally be sitting and work from there; the rest of the room will still sound good, but the chosen spot is the place to be. When showing off, make sure your guests sit there!
The opening scene of Tomorrow Never Dies was pretty good at the time, but I’m sure better ones exist now. If you have a disc with a THX trailer, that works well also. I’ve heard the pod race scene in the first Star Wars is pretty sweet.
The contractor from A&B calibrated my system, and like Klobe said, he picked the spot where we were most likely to watch movies. A&B uses Toy Story to demo their systems, so it’s another alternative. Also, I always have a hard time hearing voices during movies, so I’ve turned my center channel up a bit since the calibration was done.
