What made YouTube successful?
In less than two years YouTube went from unknown to a 1.6 billion buy out. Nice work if you can get it. Of course, now there are millions of technologist around the world thinking they could have built YouTube… Alas, another story of woulda, coulda, shoulda…
The plain truth is YouTube did not have great technology or a great business plan. They had something better, something harder to come by — true conviction.
I can only imagine how many people told the founders how dumb their ideas were. How foolish they were for starting this business. That they were about to be the next flame out like Napster. Even Internet superstars like Cuban and Calacanis piled on to let the world know how worthless this business was going to be.
Despite all this YouTube persevered to a huge success. Throughout it all they had the conviction to keep going. I am sure there were tough days. No one was there during the late nights of development and test. No one to push them on except themselves and their convictation.
Congratulations YouTube, job well done.
