College Football Week One Wrap Up
Hallelujah, College Football is back! The new TV was worth every penny this weekend. There is nothing better than high-defenition football.
Here’s a quick wrap-up of this week’s games:
Cal vs. Tennessee: The Vols are back! Granted Cal was overrated and evidently their secondary does not like to tackle. Still a big and important win for the Vols coming off last seasons debacle. Can’t say enough about Ainge’s improvement under Cutcliffe. We will know a lot more about Tenn. in two weeks when they face Florida. Until then GO VOLS.
Notre Dame vs. Ga. Tech: One word — overrated. Notre Dame is just not that good. It doesn’t matter that people in the press want them to be good. Brady Quinn is average. Notre Dame fans need to get over it. The best player on the field was Ga. Tech’s Calvin Johnson. He is a stud. Put him on your fantasy watch list for 2007.
North Texas vs. Texas: Texas looked very good against a meager opponent. North Texas was so bad, it was hard to evaluate UT. McCoy is the number one but I didn’t think there was a huge separation between him and Snead. If you had to nit-pick then you could say the passing game was not all that crisp for Texas. Then again, when you are up forty does that matter? We’ll know a lot more next week when they play Ohio State.
NIU vs. Ohio State: Troy Smith and Ginns looked very good early. They are maybe the best QB-WR combo in the country. Felt like Ohio State lost focus once they were up, no doubt looking ahead to next week’s game against Texas. For Ohio State, the defense did their job but was not overly impressive. They will need to play much better next week against Texas.
Southern Miss. Vs. Florida: Leak struggled early but the Gators turned it on in the 2nd half. Leak is a good player in the wrong system. I except to see Tebow before the end of the season. Florida faces Central Florida next week, add that one to your upset watch. Central Florida recruits well and is probably more talented then most people think. I can’t go so far as to predict and outright upset but closer then the experts think.
USC vs. Arkansas: USC just reloads at this point. They looked good top to bottom. The one bright spot for Arkansas was Mustain who threw a late TD pass. The kid may indeed be worthy of all the hype.
UAB vs. Oklahoma: Paul Thompson looked like a good WR, the problem is he is playing QB. OU maybe in for a long season.
SMU vs. Texas Tech: Well, the Mustangs kept it under 40. Hopefully, they can take home a moral victory and turn that into some real wins later this year.
Disclaimers:
- I went to SMU.
- I am a huge Tennessee fan.
- I hate Notre Dame. Always have, always will.
- I live in Austin, TX.
- The SEC is the best college football conference.
- The Big 10 and PAC 10 are overrated.
