Another week filled with discussion of drugs in sports. Lately, Sportscenter seems more like Court TV filled with press conferences, athlete denials and scientific experts explaining what could cause a normal increase in testosterone levels.

Face it, performance enhancing drugs are here to stay and will be a part of sports for the foreseeable future. What is changing is fan interest. Sports like cycling, track and field, weightlifting, and boxing are no longer all that interesting and the general public is tuning out. Any sport where one person can win alone by cheating is now just plain — boring! Even baseball a pseudo-team sport is on the decline. It’s just not all that fun to watch a juiced pitcher strike out a juiced batter. Who cares?

I am not saying you won’t find performance enhancing drugs in the NFL or NBA, I am sure someone is using. The point is it matters less in true team sports. No player can win a Super Bowl, World Cup or NBA title on their own. These sports by their very nature are more insulated from the effects of drugs. They’re more fun to watch and there is no waiting for weeks on end for sample B test results. Thankfully, football season is less than 40 days away to save us.
