I ran across this job post for a  “Product Management Ninja or Rockstar.” Writing an eye catching job description is indeed a tough job. Most are bland, boring, and describe little about the actual job. Conversely, you can go too far in trying to attract the right candidates.

So what about the Ninja title, good or bad? Here’s my take:

Pros:

  • Ninja and Rockstar are unusual words in a job title and are definitely caught my eye
  • Job title implied that position was at some kind of Internet startup (which is true).
  • Projects a fun jovial atmosphere

Cons:

  • Title doesn’t provide any specifics about the industry or product. Is this for software, hardware, martial arts?
  • Rockstar and Ninja remind me a lot of the Internet bubble days. Not so sure that’s what you want…
  • Rockstar seems to imply a good presenter and someone who likes to gain publicity. Ninja is stealth expert who applies his craft in the background. Seems contradictory.

Here are some of my suggestions:

  • Blog obsessed Product Manager wanted
  • RSS obsessed Product Manager wanted
  • Web 2.0 Product Manager wanted

What do you think? Would you interview for a job that had Ninja in the title?
